CHAPTER TEN
No Place Like Home
Colin saw Trent Peterson once more before being released from the hospital. The physical therapist watched as he took ten steps, then walked him through the stretching exercises.
"How's the pain," Peterson asked, as Colin fell back against the pillow, blowing out breaths.
"About a…" Colin considered for a moment. "About a six, I'd say. Better than yesterday."
"Good! And tomorrow it'll be better than that."
"Three months?" Colin said, shooting a sideways glance at Peterson.
"At least. You didn't stub your toe, Sergeant. You broke the longest bone in your body."
Colin nodded.
"Get out of that bed later and do ten more steps," Peterson said, standing over him with arms crossed. "Five to the bathroom, then five back. Do it when Josh is here so he can balance you if you need it."
"No problem," Colin told him.
"I'll be seeing you at home three days a week," Peterson said. "And I fully intend to work your Irish ass off. Are you up for it?"
Colin threw him a look. "You don't know me very well or you wouldn't ask that question."
Joshua entered the room just as the physical therapist was turning to leave.
"Good," Peterson said to him. "Glad you're here. Before he walks into that house tomorrow I want you to remove every single throw rug and every electrical cord that might get in his way or tangle in his crutches, then check to be sure that there's nothing else sticking out that could possibly trip him."
Joshua halted beside Colin's bed. "Do you mind if I kiss my boyfriend hello before you start issuing me orders?"
Colin snorted out a laugh.
Peterson shrugged and continued out the door without speaking.
Joshua hissed out a breath as he bent to kiss Colin. "God, I hate that guy!"
"I took ten steps today," Colin said. "Before this week ends I intend to take twenty. He's a dick, but right now he's what I need."
Joshua sat on the side of Colin's bed, chewing his lip, his eyes lowered. "I haven't been in the house since…"
"So what?" Colin said. "We'll both be there tomorrow."
"No. I'll be there tonight. He's right. I have to get that place ready for you."
"He says it'll take me three months," Colin said, then lifted Joshua's hand to his lips. "I plan to do it in two."
Joshua smiled down at him. "I'd be the last person on Earth to disagree with you."
